Email Preferences
GDPR-compliant email preference management. Let customers choose which emails they receive.
Overview
Every email sent by Giveawayz includes an unsubscribe link that takes customers to their email preferences page. This is a legal requirement under GDPR and UK data protection law, and it's handled automatically — no configuration needed on your part.
Email Categories
Customers can independently opt in or out of three email categories:
| Category | Includes | Default | |---|---|---| | Marketing | Competition launches, broadcasts, promotional emails | Opted in | | Reminders | Ending soon reminders, abandoned cart recovery | Opted in | | Results | Draw results, winner notifications, non-winner emails | Opted in |
Note
Transactional emails (order confirmations, refund notifications) are not affected by email preferences. These are always sent as they relate to completed transactions.
Customer Experience
Accessing Preferences
Customers can manage their email preferences in two ways:
- Unsubscribe link — Every email includes an "Manage email preferences" link in the footer
- Direct URL — The preferences page is publicly accessible at
https://yoursite.giveawayz.io/email-preferences?email=customer@example.com
Preferences Page
The page shows:
- The customer's email address
- Toggle switches for each email category
- A Save Preferences button
- An Unsubscribe from all option
Tip
The preferences page does not require authentication. This is intentional — GDPR requires that unsubscribing is as easy as possible, without requiring customers to log in or create an account.
How It Works Behind the Scenes
- Before sending any email, the system checks the customer's preferences for the relevant category
- If the customer has opted out of that category, the email is skipped
- Preference changes take effect immediately
- The preference state is stored per email address, not per account
GDPR Compliance
The email preferences system ensures compliance with:
- GDPR Article 7 — Consent can be withdrawn at any time, as easily as it was given
- UK PECR — Marketing emails include clear opt-out mechanisms
- CAN-SPAM — All emails identify the sender and include unsubscribe functionality
What This Means for You
- You don't need to manage unsubscribes manually — it's automatic
- Your email lists are always up to date with customer preferences
- Broadcast emails automatically skip customers who have opted out of the Marketing category
- You're compliant with UK and EU email marketing law by default
Best Practices
- Respect preferences immediately — The system handles this automatically, but if you export customer lists for external tools, check preferences first
- Don't re-subscribe customers — Once a customer opts out, they should only be re-added if they explicitly opt back in
- Keep your email content valuable — The best way to prevent unsubscribes is to send emails worth reading
